"I have the most generous, funny, loving, without-fault sister ever, who inspires others to be as dedicated, giving, talented, and life-loving as she. My Mom died when I was 18 months old, so my 15-year-old sister quit school to help Grandmother take care of me and my brother, and help with the many chores of life on Tancook Island, NS, a traditional fishing community. She raised five children, passing on to them, and her ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, the island’s values and traditions-three new generations of Tancookers! Everyone is welcome in her home. There was always room for the many teenagers who felt at home in her house. She is a very patient person and accepts people for who they are. Her talents include painting, rug-hooking, and the best blueberry wine on Tancook. She is actively involved in Popplerock, the island’s arts and crafts collective. She loves the community dances—she does a mean waltz or twist. Eighty in August--we should all be so young."
